Why is there a grommet on the side of the front mudguard?
General concensus is that the Fazer re-uses the mudguard from another bike from Yamaha's range
(although nobody seems to know which bike), and that bike had a conventional mechanically operated
speedo (in which the cable has an inner which revolves inside the outer). Bends in these cables
need to be of fairly large radius in order to avoid stressing the cable inner, and hence cable
failure, so they often follow a sweeping curve from wheel hub to speedo head via a guide located
on the front mudguard.
With the Fazer having an electronic speedo, the cable can follow a much 'tidier' route (alongside
the brake hose) making the mudguard-mounted guide unnecessary, but the hole remains and is blanked
off by the grommet.
Well I'm convinced, anyway.

Rear Mudguard Tip
From a post, by GringoRojo, on the FOC-U messageboard:
"For those less worried about style and more about cleanliness, the rear fender extender from a Thundercat
will fit straight onto all 600 fazers upto the 2001 model - all the ones with the old square lights, not
sure if the foxeye version fits though. Doesn't fit on the Thou.
Keeps crud and rain off the tailsection, off your topbox (if you have one) and off your pillions back."
(I'm pretty sure this applies to all models from 98-03 - but not the new R6-engined ones)

Annoying Vibration from Fairing
From a post, by Train Driver, on the FOC-U messageboard:
"I had an annoying vibration/rattle at certain revs. I tried tightening every conceivable nut and bolt but still
could not find the problem.
Someone mentioned to me that the indicator stems vibrate in their fairing sockets and that is the probable
cause.
I removed the indicators and put a few thin rubber bands around the indicator stem so that when you refit them
they are a much tighter fit and the rubber soaks up any vibration. Just make sure you leave enough gap for the
indicator stems to properly locate in the fairing socket and the retaining clips can bite in position to secure the
fitting."
(Incidentally, another cause of such a vibration that I've encountered is the shroud over the lefthand headlamp (pre 02
models). Have a look in the headlights section for more on this one)

Fairing Repairs the Rubbermat Way
Broken or cracked your fairing? Looking to fix it but don't know how?
Well look no more. That crafty norvern fix-it guru Rubbermat has come up with
a way of repairing such problems using no more than a soldering iron, a couple of
teabags, a tie-wrap, a bit of string and an old coat hanger. He's three parts human,
one part genius, I tell you**
(Actually, I made up the bit about the the tie-wrap and the bit of string. Although I
can promise you that it does feature the use of a coat hanger, and the teabags will
come in handy for a cuppa when you're finished)
**Some rather uncharitable types have said that the human bits are a good deal more - er - substantial than the genius bits.
But that's just cruel, and I distance myself from that sort of thing.
Click here to find out what the hell I'm prattling on about. You'll be glad you did.
