Pond Plants

  Purple loosestrife White water lily

Calla palustris

The tall mauve flowered plant in clumps by the pond edge is purple loosestrife. Flowering slightly earlier is yellow flag, a type of iris which grows near water with sword-like green leaves. There are also rushes and water forget-me-not growing along the edge - marginal plants. A native white water lily was planted in a basket at the bottom of the pond, and this has now produced lily pad leaves at the surface and a few spectacular flowers. Pondweed, which helps to oxygenate the water, was sunk in the same way, and can be seen growing well, just below the surface. Duckweed is the tiny, round, green plant which tends to carpet the surface, and can be a nuisance – it obscures our view into the water. The Pond Club skim it off regularly but it returns rapidly. However a small amount is acceptable, as it is a natural plant, and it helps to keep the water shaded from hot sun.
