In the early 1980s I found myself on the editorial committee of a magazine called Pssst! It was an attempt to create an alternative type of comics/cartoon magazine for the mass market. Although sucessful in many ways, it did not reach the greater audience it was intended for and was unable to continue when its parent company went into liquidation.
