I initially started from NT698567 where the map showed a track heading SW towards the hill, but this was not visible on the ground. Incidentally the vehicle track starting from the same point circles round (not shown on the map) to flank the hill on it's E side. Instead I drove further down the road to park at NT707558 where a gate opposite provided eventual access to the fell (a better track meets the road at NT708555) for a direct ascent of the hill.
