Those checked for information about PDI, and comments

PAGB

In October 2003, the Executive adopted guidelines for organisers of PDI events seeking PAGB Patronage. Comments by mbs in 2006 are added in blue

Rules should define the following:

  • Entries to digital exhibitions should be forwarded at the best quality generally available.
  • Selectors should view entries projected at the same time and place, and make their selections under appropriate lighting conditions.
  • Publication of entries should be at a resolution that protects the copyright of the entrant; and
  • Catalogues must be in a printed or printable form and entrants should have the option of requesting a printed copy.

Comments in 2006: There is no definition of ‘quality’ or whether this is the author’s production quality or the organiser’s projection quality. The Technical Standards work now suggests that this statement could be much improved. ‘Publication’ means web/CD, and copyright protection remains an issue. ‘Catalogue’ refers to making available the list of results/acceptances. PAGB does not require, as part of patronage, that the catalogue is illustrated.

CACC

Searched 10/6/5.  See under Clubs

Feb-06.  Produced two documents by Philip Stapleton (qv Marlow) and Steve Braber (qv Amersham) from group including Stan McCartin & Don Byatt. Refer to CACC website for copies

L&CPU

Searched 13/6/5.  Most of site out of use, and no links to clubs available.  Southport contacted directly.

Searched 14/2/6. Site rebuilt. L&CPU has a digital image event with a set of rules. These are quite simple and require images to be sized to maximum 1024x768 (XGA). [There is an error in requiring 72dpi for images as this is irrelevant for projection.]  Images smaller than the maximumin either direction should be filled with black. [Ie, it would have been simpler to require the image of whatever dimensions to be flattened over a black-filled layer of exactly 1024x768.]

Some Clubs have websites; some say they have digital projection, but only Wilmslow Guild has any technical detail, which basically reprints that from L&CPU.

SPF

Searched 12/6/5.  Very few clubs with websites.  Bon Acord (Aberdeen) not included (but see search via PSA)

SF

Searched 20/6/5.  Minority of clubs with websites.  Several have digital projectors.  See under Clubs.  SF also runs a Federation web-based digital comp, requiring small pictures of 400 pix.

At Aug-05, SF Council produced a draft document with advice about PDI covering the expected topics (as here), and reported:

Following Graham's notice to Federations, the Southern formed a sub committee of computer literate, and interested parties who have produced the following document. We only had our first Council meeting last night (following the Summer break) and, following a brief discussion will not be releasing the document as, in some areas it was considered "light" and additional information needs to be added. I do not thimk anyone had qualms about the content only that, for Council it was not broad enough in various areas. I doubt that there is anything new in it for the sub committee (it is aimed at non computer literate clubs thinking of buying a projector, but thought it might be of interest.

SPA

Searched on 24/6/5.  Many clubs have websites, but several defective/missing.  Apart from Farnborough (qv, also SF), no obvious information about digital comps. However, direct contact with Ludshott and Tandridge (see ‘People’)

WPF

Searched 26/6/5.  Gwynfa club is planning to host an open event in Oct-05.  Otherwise, no info found

WCPF

Searched on 24/6/5.  Many clubs with sites, but none obviously with technical info about PDI.  Dennis Coote (? club) writes in WCPF newsletter of intention to develop s/w for competition management.  But see note from Denzil Ellis and WCPF committee action.

YPU
