PSA
Photo Society of America

Includes consolidated exhibition standards used for patronage.  These do not specify technical standards for images, which are left to individual organisers.  Judging may be by projection, by one or more monitors, or on web.

http://psa-eid.org

PSA includes an Electronic Imaging Division (EID).  Patronage can be applied for by events using projected digital images (PDI).  EID runs a Creative Competition for Individuals (CCI) which has some standards for authors submitting.  Images must be in JPEG format, with a naming convention to ensure unique filenames; pixel dimensions XGA max, and compressed to no more than 300KB.  Images are submitted by e-mail  (which does not preclude inclusion of a colour profile).  The projector setup and and colour profiling are not specified.

PSA-EID includes a discussion forum.  It seems that many people have quite simple questions on PDI.

PSA-EID has a large link index to suppliers of h/w and s/w, but not to suppliers of digital projectors.

List of electronic exhibitions with PSA patronage includes Aberdeen (Bon Acord), and others, with their sites reachable by links from EID.  List summarises the technical specifications for each available site.

[1024x768  jpg  <350KB]

[1024x768  72dpi  jpg  <500KB]

[1024x???  72dpi  jpg]

[1024x768  jpg  <350KB  sRGB  gamma=2.2]

[1024x???  72dpi  jpg on CD]

[1024x768  jpg  <2MB]

[1024x768  jpg  <450KB  CD]

Pixel size is standard.  72dpi is meaningless even when quoted.  jpg is usual, but file size maxima vary.  Only one exhibition mentioned the colour space and gamma which would be used to display.

The file naming conventions are more or less unique to each event.

FIAP

Revised, as more informationnow found

FIAP has a basic standard document  (pdf copy here), using 1024 on the long side (not confirmed that this refers only to landscape), jpg file, compression at <=10 which is still high quality.  Notes that 72dpi is not required.  No comments on colour space.

FIAP has a file naming convention compatible with DOS 8+3 format.

1-2  country code  (gb, fr, etc)

3-7  shortened author name

8  sequence number

FIAP patronage list includes several salons advertising a digital section.  Shown here with abbreviated digital specs.  None of these give information about colour space.

Singapore:  2000 pixels long (unusual);  8-bit jpg with minimal compression.

Argus (Belgium):  jpg  (no other specification)

Hayange (France):  up to 1024x768 and landscape only;  jpg file;  <=500KB

Italian circuit:  1024 long side  (nil about verticals); jpg; 72dpi

Argentine:  1024 long side;  72dpi;  using projector at 1024x768

Austria:  up to 1024 wide;  72ppi

Salons require various file naming formats.  May use country alpha code or country numeric telephone code  (uk=0044).

Website includes a publications section with standards documents for ‘E-Photography’.  Good explanation of requirements for colour.  Draft of latest revision is suggestions salons judge from a monitor rather than projector.  Does not think projectors can be easily profiled.  2005 final version of standards documents can be downloaded  (pdf copy here).  Recommends  IrfanView  software for displaying  (qv).
