Update Feb-06: Author of PhotoCompViewer, EasyComp and ImageArchivist. Information at www.photocompsoftware.com Contact at pstapleton@dial.pipex.com Marlow Camera Club has been running DigiComp and other PDI competitions since 2000. We have a file size limit of 1.5mb and a requirement that the competitor originated all components of the image themself and with a camera. The software products were originally developed for DigiComp and internal competitions but are now in use by a number of clubs - to the extent we now run fully automated inter-club digital competitions. The web site also contains a paper on image resolution and compression. In reality, all the discussion about image quality and resizing is largely irrelevant while projectors only produce 1024x768 pixels with a very limited colour gamut .
Original: You might want to look at the work I did on resolution at http://www.photocompviewer.co.uk/Compression/ImageSizes.html Several clubs are now using my competition software - you can download the manual in PDF form from http://www.photocompviewer.co.uk/PhotoCompViewer.pdf I offer it as a reference for what you need competition software to do for you. However, I do hope it becomes the standard in time, as this will make interclub competitions very easy to manage. Please keep me informed of progress with the committee. [Need to check whether all of www.photocompview.co.uk has been transferred to www.photocompsoftware.com ] |

David Huntingford, Secretary of Ludshott PC (SPA) |
Ludshott Photographic Club have a NEC projector and a Packard Bell laptop. We use the RPS recommended image size of 1024 x 768 at 144 pixels/inch. Our files are saved in JPEG as TIFF files cannot be transferred to Picture - exe. As yet we have no rules for using digital projection for competitions as there appears to be no programme available that would suite our needs for such use, e.g. being able to pull out individual images for later judgment. As you are no doubt aware the same projector will give different colour and contrast renditions on different screens. This is no different to what we see now when entering inter-club competitions where all the projectors and screens are different, what may be a good image on our club set up may not come across as well on someone else set up. We as a club cannot see digital being any different to the current situation with slides. Contact at d.huntingford@virgin.net |

Tony Riley (in SPA) |
Runs training courses, and has website at www.imageplace.co.uk with tutorial material and info on how and why of colour profiling. I am a long term lecturer and judge with the Surrey Photographic Association and also provide colour management and suppport services targeted for the enthusiast market. I have been working with digital imaging for almost 15 years, and a user of digital projectors for well over 5 years. I have been investigating the suitability of digital projectors for still photographic image presentation for some time and fronted a workshop day on the subject for the Southern Federation in March this year. After some considerable initial difficulties, I have now established meaningful dialogues with people from both NEC and Canon and have been able to carry out several hands on assessments. I would appreciate sharing information with you, particularly as I am about to make a new purchase as are several clubs that I have links with. Aug-06: A short set of ‘rules’ for a digital competition can be downloaded here. These predate and are similar to the example in Annex 1 of paper by mbs here. Also proposing a filenaming convention which would compress the attribution and author details metadata. To be discussed in a metadata review later. Advice notes can be obtained from Tony Riley by automated e-mail replies. For a copy of comp ‘rules’ proposals, send blank e-mail with ‘dprules’ in the subject line to dprules@imageplace.co.uk For a copy of filenaming proposals, send blank e-mail with ‘dpfilenames’ in the subject line to dpfilenames@imageplace.co.uk Refer to Tony for other available advice notes. |
