AGNES F BRYSON, who likes to be known as Bunty, is an authority on Ayrshire needlework, to which she “became addicted from the very first stitch” on attending a class on the subject in 1956. In the introduction (p 10) to her book Ayrshire Needlework (B. T. Batsford Ltd, London, 1989, ISBN 0 7134 5928 X), she wrote, “living in Ayrshire … I felt I could not allow this beautiful old craft to die. Therefore I set myself the task of keeping it alive and passing on my knowledge of it to as many people as possible.” Mrs Bryson had of course been busy reviving interest in the craft and passing on her knowledge for many years before 1989 when Ayrshire Needlework appeared. As a result of her teaching and demonstrating activities she had become known as an authority and a collector, and many examples of Ayrshire pieces made their way to her by various routes. This catalogue lists and describes major parts of Mrs Bryson’s fine collection.
