Joel BUCKLEY was born on 21st October 1861, at Holme Lane Ecclesfield, the son of Jeremiah BUCKLEY, a shoemaker, and Mary (neé PROCTER).
| He had 3 older brothers and 5 older
sisters; John Thomas christened at Bradfield on 1st February 1846; Harriet
born on 27th July 1847 at Wadsley, Jeremiah, born 10th October 1848,
Ann born Wadsley on 18th October 1850, Mary born at Walkley in1852,
Elizabeth born at Wadsley in1854, George born at Gatefield Farm,
Infirmary Road, Sheffield on 13th December 1856 and Sarah born on 2nd
November1858 at Holme Lane.
The family however were not all living at Holme Lane, according to the 1861 census two of the children, Jeremiah and Ann were living with their grandparents, John and Ann BUCKLEY and their uncles, George and Joel and Harriet was working as a dairy maid on the farm of her Uncle John. |

When Joel was only a year old his mother Mary died, on 12th December1862 and on the night of 11th March 1864 the second disaster in Joel’s life occurred when the Dale Dyke Dam burst some 6 mile upstream from Holme Road causing ‘The Great Sheffield Flood’ and resulting in the deaths of 282 people. Not all the deaths occurred on that night, some occurred later of Typhus or as in Joel’s father’s case, on 12th August 1864, after catching pneumonia. Jeremiah's widowed sister Hannah submitted a flood claim on behalf of the orphaned children and it reasonable to assume that those not of working age were left in her care, although the 1871 census shows Sarah living with her uncle Joel Buckley at Bradfield and Joel with his elder brother Jeremiah also at Bradfield.
By 1881 Joel has taken up his father's profession as a
shoemaker and is lodging at Junction, Saddleworth with the TODD family from
Essex.

The following year, on 4th September 1882, Joel BUCKLEY married Elizabeth KERSHAW, a weaver from Saddleworth, at Christ Church, Denshaw and their first son John William was born 12th July 1885 at 452 Ripponden Road, Oldham. (This address falls very close to Elizabeth's former home at Moorside, Sholver.)

Their second child, a daughter, Annie Elizabeth, was born on 28th December 1888 at 189 South Street Eccleshall Bierlow. At this time Joel describes himself as a Journeyman Shoemaker.

3 years later the family were living at 31 High Street, Grantham, Lincs when the couples' third child Edith was born on 1st February 1891. Joel is still described as a 'Journeyman Shoemaker'.
In the 1891 Census the family are living at 31 High Street Grantham with a 'Boarder', Francis W FitzGibbons, a 20 year old shoemaker. Both he and Joel are described as 'employed'
The 1901 Census records the family living at Barugh Green near Barnsley, Joel is still plying his shoemaker trade, but John William is working as 'a coal hewer's trammer' in a local mine (possibly Silkstone).
Joel died during an operation for acute appendicitis at the Sheffield Royal Infirmary on 4th January 1909, a year before his son John William was to marry. The death certificate shows John William living at The Cottage Middle Ings Hoyland, near Barnsley and it is likely that this was the family home at that time.
