23/08/2008
Prototype door cap made from thin plywwod and a length of central heating insulation sliced in half.
I made a little tool using a craft knife blade and a piece of drain pipe to perform the slicing operation.

Underside showing M5 fixings.
I only used 3 in critical points so that the trim follows the curve of the door.

Each end has a little ply piece to stop foam collapsing when covered with leathercloth.
This is the front end which I cut at 45 deg to follow the line of the dashboard.

23/08/2008
Trimmed with some leathercloth I had left over from my last Marlin build 25 years ago!
Not the final colour I might add - just to test the principal.

In place on the door (OK so its held in place with selotape - I ran out of M5 nuts...)
Looks good though.

First attempt at making a curved plywood piece to fit the rear (Using Peter's mould). Total failure! Outer layer cracked and it de-laminated. Must try harder...

I made up a plate for the botton of the door to land on. It's made from a piece of nylon about 3mm thick (ex chopping board!) pop riveted to the cill about 2/3rds of way along from the hinge end. This stops the chance of the bottom of the door scraping on the cill when someone heavy handed shuts it. A simple but good mod IMHO.

Underneath of the MX5 seats showing the heavy duty construction and runners

14/09/08
Modified seat runners with spacers to fit to the flat Marlin floor. (Yes this is the other seat - no cover!)
14/09/08
I permanently riveted the scuttle top packing pieces into place as I can see them falling out once the car is in use.
14/09/08
Scuttle closing plate in place. Plate is pop rived to scuttle top and screwed to my bulkhead reinforcing tube. You can see how much the bulkhead top is distorted. Eventually I will seal along here with some sikaflex or something similar. Note my greasy fingerprints!
14/09/08
Plate for access to the BMW fusebox which now sits on a shelf in the passenger footwell. The rod on the right side is my bonnet support which clips handily into a BMW prake pipe clip.

14/09/08
Bulkhead reinforcing tube . The wiring poking through is for the windscreen wipers. (I am planning well in advance lol)
23/01/09
MX5 seat looking a bit past its sell by date
23/01/09
New leather seat covers.
23/01/09
MX5 seat in the nude! Foam in pretty good shape although I was to find out later that the drivers seat wasn't quite so good

23/01/09
The reason for using production seats. Fully adjustable backrest and strongly made. I ground off the no longer needed seat belt mount.
23/01/09
Seat base foam prepared for fitting of new cover. I used ti-wraps instead of hog rings. Much easier, adjustable and I didn't need to buy hog ring pliers
23/01/09
Two as new seats! They actually look better in the flesh than in the picture.
