Wiring for headlights. The DIY U shaped bracket will mount the headlight a little higher than Marlin's own bracket.
Normally I would use bullet sockets on the hot side of wiring but I couldn't get them through the hollow headlight bolt.

Wiring from above
. Wire to the left is for the spotlight, to the right for the indicator which I am planning to mount on the wing. U shaped metal clip makes sure that the node con doesn't rub on the wiring in any way.

New Fiamma horns from Ebay. Exactly the same as the original BMW ones except not rusty
!

Wiring run from bulkhead to front.

Front bumper fitting. You can see the sleeve that was needed to take up the slack - made from galvanised sheet left over from making the exhaust heatshield.

Node coane fitted for the umpteenth time. Hope it doesn't have to come off again too often as the screws are a b*gger to get at.

Side bonnet fitted.

The other side bonnet fitted. Top bonnets next whoopee!!!!

Wiring runs under the nose cone. Marlin made a poor job of cutting out the nose cone to fit the chassis. By the time I had tidied it up there was a big gap all round. I used this to my advantage to run the wiring as I didn't want to run it through the bodywork.

Trying to find the centre line for the bonnet. The problem is that the nose isn't 100% symetrical. In the end I gave up trying to be clever and did it by eye.

Trial fit of the bonnet once the front and back had been trimmed.

Cutting the bonnet to fit. I must have measured it about half a dozen times before having the courage to cut it. I used a hand saw cause I dudn't trust my skill with a jigsaw. Took a bit longer but produced a very accurate cut.

It fits! Only taken two weekends to get this far. Just the other side to do now.

I allowed a 2mm gap between the top and side bonnets. Seen here with the spacers still in place. The front bonnet catch was a pain to fit as I had to cut away some of the vertical nose/radiator support bracket. It would have been better if there were a few less louvers in the side bonnet as it would have given me more space to fit it.

Bonnet fitting finally complete all except for a few missing screws. Can't beleive it's taken almost a month to fit the bonnets although I have been a bit distracted buying a new car :-)

Bonnet opened on stay.
03/03/2008
Close up of bottom end of stay supported by a bracket bolted to the side bonnet. The top of the stay simply fits through a hole in the top bonnet flange, reinforced with a piece of 3mm aly pop riveted to it.

The bonnet stay components. The rod is 5mm steel (B&Q!) I bent it by first heating it to dull red with a blow torch. One end is threaded and screws into the lower bracket. The little aly plate reinforces the top bonnet where the stay pokes through a hole in the flange.
