WELCOME!

Over the years since 1920 some of the important events in the life of Taunton have been recorded on cine film, either at the request of the Council or by amateurs. Various film sizes have been used and unfortunately not all the important events have been put on record.

The films languished in the strongroom in the Old Municipal Buildings until 1986 when the appropriate Committee of the Taunton Deane Borough Council, lead by Councillor Peter May, decided they should be properly preserved and recorded on video tape.

This was done by Jon Brown Video of Bridge Street Taunton and mastercopies of the films have been placed with the original films in the custody of the Secretary and Solicitor of the Taunton Deane Council.

The Committee felt that some of the events needed explanation and identification, therefore at their request Kenneth Horne, former Town Clerk of Taunton, researched records and local newspapers and made a commentary which was added to the videos as they were recorded.

The master copies of the films continued to languish unseen in the Council's custody until 2007 when Michael Cull, former Sergeant-at-Mace to the Mayor of Taunton Deane, who obtained copies of the archived films during his time in the Council's employ, decided to make them more accessible to the public.

Videos will be added regularly as time permits roughly in chronological order, so if you do not find anything to your liking please come back again later.
