The oldest electric railway in the world still operating (on the distinctly odd 2' 8½ " gauge) runs from what is now the Marina...........
To the Aquarium, near the pier. This last section is raised above the beach level: much of the line was laid like this in times past.
All the trains seen in operation on my visit looked much the same, with a central saloon and open end platforms.
The track usually looks like this...............
............... except on this new deviation, by the site of what is going to be a volleyball court.
Even when you get the chance to see below the 4-wheeled cars, there's very little to be seen!
It might be old, but it can still shift the crowds! One of the passing loops is disconnected, so only a 2 train service can currently be operated.
One perennial problem is the large number of foot crossings: the trains are equipped with fairground-type sirens, which don't sound "train-like" to my ears.
This new station (and substation) (and pumping station) at the Marina is comparatively recent.
The "CAUTION" notices are a Volk's special! |
