Identity:

A person can become separated from family, friends and community for many reasons.  These separations can be physical, emotional and spiritual, and as a result the person experiencing this separation can lose their sense of belonging and identity.  Without the support they become vulnerable and isolated.

To protect themselves from their vulnerability ‘walls’ are built.  It is then sometimes difficult to reach the person through these defensive barriers.  For a time that person can feel empty and lost; unable to find their true self.  It is a dark time.

Gradually as new feelings of self emerge and confidence builds, the vulnerability is chipped away and the ‘wall’ is pulled away to reveal a new trust and hope for the future.  What once was dark emerges in a new light.

Lorraine writes:

My dad is artistic and my mum has a love of all nature, so that is where I began: endless walks along country lanes, collecting flowers and drawing them so that their image did not fade.  Sharing the experience, and so it continues.

I did the college thing and attained the bits of paper.  Developed my abilities and expanded my skills.  Taught, and tried to enthuse and motivate others in the same way.  Found new directions, tried and experienced new things, places, events and arrived at where I am now.  My work symbolises a memory. Printmaking, photography, three -dimensional work; I specialise in nothing but encompass everything if it floats a memory.
