Annual Report - July 2008

The Cub pack currently has a membership of 28 boys, who, like everyone else in West Wirral Scouting, have had a busy year. After the end of the 2007 Centenary Year, there began the Centenary of Scouting in Wirral (for those of you who may have wondered why we held another Centenary camp this year!). Both celebration camps offered lots of activities to the boys (and, this year, the leaders and helpers got to try a few interesting activities as well, such as rifle shooting, climbing the training wall and having giant snakes draped round their necks).
There have been many other District events which we have taken part in. There was the bag-packing at Sainsbury’s, and the Christmas Post, both of course fund-raising efforts; the tree-planting at Bidston which although not going according to plan did, in the end, result in the planting of hundreds of trees; the brilliant Gang Show which four of our Cubs took part in; and the St George’s Day Parade.
Cub events included a trip to Manchester Science Museum, the District Quiz, the Safety Poster competition, in which our team came second, the Carol Service, at which some of our Cubs assisted with music or prayers, the hard-fought 5-a-side Football Tournament, the Swimming Gala which our team won in impressive fashion, and the usual trip to Camelot theme park.

Last September saw the District autumn camp at Queen Charlotte’s Woods, at which the theme was The Environment. We continued with  work about “green” issues afterwards, which resulted in some of the Cubs earning their Environmental Award. This was followed by several activities for the Outdoor Challenge badge, and over this last term we have been working towards the Scientist badge.  Early this year, some Cubs joined the Scouts to undertake the  annual maintenance of the pond and vegetable beds at Great Meols School.
On pack-nights, we have also paid a visit to Leasowe Lighthouse, learned a bit about Fair Trade and Christian Aid, made our own Easter eggs, learnt how to use compasses, and made model boats out of rubbish and sailed them on the boating pond. Most recently, we have had visits from the RSPCA animal rescue centre, and from a  story-teller, and have been canoeing on the Marine Lake.
Throughout the year the pack has benefitted from the assistance of Tina Joyce, and since January also of  four students doing Duke of Edinburgh Awards, with a fifth joining us at Easter. Thanks are due to all of them, of course, and also the parents who have helped with trips and camps.
