Surrey Sevens 13 May 2007

Played six, won 4, came home with silver ware. What a great day out !!!

Despite the weather [perfect for rugby 15's rugby, not so much for 7's], the Gremo’s got stuck in straight away with a very comfortable win against Beckenham 40 - 5 and another similar win straight afterwards.

The coaches were a little concerned that the Gremo's were in need of stronger opposition if we were eventually to take the Cup home and sure enough they got in the next 2 matches, which were closely fought affairs.

In both our third (Cramberliegh) and fourth game (Epsom and Surrey) against stronger and more mobile teams, we were beaten only by one score. But that was enough ..... the Gremo's were out of the Cup but looking strong for the Plate.

The coaches are convinced that playing four games one after the other was a contributing factor to our defeats, although temporarily losing Ellie at 10 lost us continuity between the forwards and backs.

After a nice lunch break spent mostly in the team bus [AKA GT’s Cherokee] we took the decision to go out strong and do our best to ensure coming home with a prize.

The Semi final against Petersfield went our way with Izzy and the now restored Ellie working well together again in the middle of the park. Superb team effort allowed the ball to flow across the pitch on several occasions to our vultures on the wing who showed no mercy and ran home several tries in short succession.

The final against Burgess Hill was played almost straight away. The benefit of the Gremo’s fitness training bore fruits at this stage with the Gremo’s stamina coming through. The Gremo’s got stuck into the task in hand and attacked the final with the same commitment as the Semi Final.

The outcome was a most pleasing win and the resultant silverware to add to our collection back at GRFC.

It is to the Gremo’s credit that the referee in the semi and final made a point of finding GT to compliment him on you’re tackling and saying that the Gremo’s were without doubt the best tackling team of the day ~ well done! That’s almost better than taking home silverware.

Moments worthy of mention :

o Rhianne ~ great, safe hands on some scrappy passes. How’s that for commitment? Playing 7’s on your birthday!!

o Izzy ~ great foraging in the set pieces and open play and good pressure on opposing scrum halves.

o Flippa ~ always there on the wing to support the ball carrier. The most unlucky player not to have scored.

o Moggy ~ for always being there and digging the balls out of mauls. Truly superb.

o Stacey ~ some fantastic breaks and managed to tow along several of the opposition on a number of occasions.

o Ellie ~ excellent linking between the forwards and the backs that made ALL the difference. A number of great high hanging restarts

o Percy ~ “volunteered” for the front row and improved with every scrum. Have we found another prop?

o Fluff ~ now known as such not because of her hair but because of her humungous “fluff” on the one and only penalty move of the day

o Mouse ~ most memorable moment was laughing her head off while handing off/towing along the opposition. Great play all day long.

o Lampy ~ what can you say? Top try scorer and best try of the day when she handed/batted off five of the oppo on a 50m run in the semi final.

o Munch ~ Ohh yes!!! Consistent try stopping tackles only matched by great support play and resultant tries.

o Phat bird ~ top sock carrier and H2o provider. Especially noted for only losing it once with her Dad during the whole day.

At the start of the day, the coaches had asked for 100% commitment and every one of the Gremo’s gave it. What more can one ask?

A thoroughly enjoyable day and a good result.

Thanks Gremo’s. Parents , spectators and coaches are all so very proud of what must be the most successful squad at GRFC.

Next stop …………… Cornwall!!
