On Friday the 6th
December, 1929 at 7.30pm at The Hall, West Mill, Buntingford.
A packed house enjoyed a magical evening of entertainment,
the performers were, Harry Kaye, Horace Dawes & Albert Holt.
After the show it was decided to meet again & form a magical society.
The first meeting took place on the 13/02/1930 at The Priests House, Broxbourne,
Herts.
A delightful old oak paneled house, famous for it's 'Priests Hole'.
The house was then the home of Horace Dawes.
Under the oak beams the following magicians were present, Harry Kaye, Horace Dawes, Charles Baker,
Charles Pearson, Sydney Dawes, & Charles
Campkin.
It was proposed originally that the society be called, 'The East Herts
& North Middlesex Magical Society',- what a mouthful! However Albert
Holt who was not able to attend this meeting had earlier proposed that
they call themselves 'The Merlin Magical Society', which was unanimously
adopted.
It was decided that it's control should be in the hands of the following
officers, President,
Vice President, Chairman, Vice Chairman, a committee of three
& a Secretary.
The question of founder members has sometimes arisen & various names
mentioned, which on the evidence of the records could not possibly
qualify.
Strictly the term only applies to those present on the 13/02/1930.
Albert Holt was unable to be there, but as one of the instigators of the
society he really deserves to be included.
