Shirley Wise (nee Orton) has had a long association with books in Public, College and University Libraries. She married Terry Wise in 1969 becoming a full-time wife and then mother. In December 1984 she established a small printing, publishing and bookselling business with the title of Imperial Press. As well as printing the catalogues. stationery etc & some of the books published by Athena Books, for her husband Terry, she also had a number of well known customers in the wargaming hobby for whom she printed and distributed books. Having retired (almost), her main business occupation is editing, printing and distributing “A Guide to Military Museums and other places of military interest” (see link on left), which Terry founded in 1969. |

Before marriage Terry had been in general bookselling, rising to sales manager of the third largest bookshop in London & area. In 1967 he began writing for a living, & in the next 14 years had published some 40 books & over 400 articles on military history & related subjects. In 1981 he set up Athena Books in Doncaster, a mail order business specializing in military history. Athena was sold in 1991 & he established Terence Wise Military Books, specializing in regimental histories & reprinting out-of-print titles on 18th century military history. Terence Wise Military Books was transferred to our daughter Rachel Harper in the autumn of 2000, and she now runs the business as Bellona Books. |

We have been in the book business - lending, teaching, selling, writing, editing, publishing & printing - for some 44 years. We are now more or less retired. but old booksellers never die, so from time to time I will be publishing lists of some of our own publications and some other titles which we have collected along the way.
