LAKELAND LANEQUEST 2008 SERIES OFF TO A
FLYING START!!
A record entry of over 120 riders made event 1 of this years’ eagerly
awaited Lakeland Lanequest Series an outstanding success. With a 32
mile course and a 2 hour time limit, competitors ranged from top local
riders, out for a win to families and generation pairs enjoying a good
ride in beautiful evening sunshine around the leafy lanes surrounding
the event start and finish at the excellent and accommodating
Strickland Arms, Sizergh.
The premise of a Lanequest is quite simple: you need a bike, any bike,
a mapboard (cardboard will do), a cycling helmet, and an ability to
know your way around an Ordnance Survey Map.
With 30 “controls” sited mainly on footpath/bridleway fingerposts, all
reachable on tarmac, the aim is to visit as many as possible , punching
your control card at each one: 30 controls over a 32 mile route in
2hours takes some doing. On Event 1, last years overall series winner
and Wheelbase (Series Sponsors) rider Paul Trott yet again reigned
supreme, covering the 32 plus mile route in just under 2 hours which
included 30 stops to punch his control card, and some time to stop and
check the route whilst underway: an awesome achievement!
Staveley based rider Mike Toyn wasn’t far behind however, and collected
just a few seconds time penalties which saw him just pipped into second
place. Last years Series Womens Solo winner, Anne Plant again
demonstrated why she is a Champion Ladies Cyclist by an outright win
yet again.
From mixed pairs on tandems to mums and daughters on sit up and beg
bikes, this event had them all, and thoroughly enjoyable they found
it.! Commented Series Co-ordinator and Lanequest Founder Carol McNeill
:” We had a fabulous but entirely un-expectedly high turn out,
which caused a few heart stopping moments when we ran out of maps! A
quick car ride to Wheelbase HQ in Staveley saved the day and within 20
minutes we had an additional supply of for competitors to use.”
Event 2 takes place from the Sandside Inn at Arnside next Tuesday
evening, with starts from 5.30 to 7pm. See www.mintcakemtb.co.uk and
