Spiral Dive

If a spin does not fully develop, a spiral dive may result instead.

The recovery is:

  1. Roll the wings level with stick & rudder.
  2. Smoothly recover from the dive.

Doing both at the same time can overstress the glider.

Comparison of spin and spiral dive:

SYMPTOM SPIN SPIRAL DIVE
Attitude Nose well down, may be almost vertical. Nose down
Speed Increases rapidly but airspeed indicator may show a low fluctuating reading. Increases rapidly, should be shown on airspeed indicator.
Rotation Usually rapid. Usually slow.
Rate of descent Very fast. Not so fast unless a very steep dive.
Control forces. Ailerons and elevator weak and unresponsive. Rudder harder to move - may be hard over in the direction of the spin. Good response. Stick forces high if pulled back. (positive 'G' force).
