The Church of the Holy Cross, Moreton Morrell
Brief HistoryThe date that a church was first built in Moreton Morrell is unknown, but it is possible that there may have been a church in Anglo-Saxon times. In the Domesday Book of 1086 a priest at Moretone is mentioned while the manor was known to be well established in Edward the Confessor's reign. The entry in the Domesday Book mentions that a Count de Meulan was Lord of the Manor, and that a priest, 18 bondmen, 20 villeins and one border lived in the manor that comprised 700 acres. The main fabric of the church dates from the 13th Century, but the nave is probably of 12th Century origin. Further alterations to the church can be dated between the 13th to 15th Centuries. Church ServicesOn most Sundays, services are held in the four parishes of Moreton Morrell; Newbold Pacey and Ashorne; and Lighthorne, Lighthorne Heath and Chesterton. These are:
Each church takes it in turn to have a different service and these are advertised each month in the MidFosse Parishes magazine, on the Church notice board, and here on this website on the regularly updated Diary of Events webpage. In the specific case where five Sundays occur within a calendar month, only one 10.30am All age Eucharist is held in one of the Parish Churches. Every Thursday, there is a 10.00am Eucharist at Moreton Morrell. The Church of the Holy Cross is a centre of our community and worship and this has continued here for hundreds of years. The church and the village primary school combine to do many things together, including some services, assemblies and the annual Summer Fete. Baptisms, confirmations, weddings and funerals also take place at the church. Moreton Morrell: Church of the Holy CrossRector: John Burrell; email:
