RENDEVOUS
- The rendezvous for a walk is given as a six-digit Grid Reference viz. GR171520. The first 3 digits (171) refer to the horizontal scale along the top & bottom edges of the map and the last 3 digits (520) refer to the vertical scale at each side of the map. The Meeting Point is principally determined from the first 2 digits of each 3 digit number by locating 17 on the top or bottom horizontal scale, then finding 52 on the vertical scale at either side. The rendezvous is within the grid square at the crossing point of a vertical line from 17 and a horizontal line from 52. The third of the 3 digits will not be printed on the map and its position must be estimated within the grid square you have now found. In this example you should be going to Ryka's Car Park at Burford Bridge.
- Most of our walks take place within the area covered by the OS 1:50,000 scale Landranger Map No.186 (Aldershot & Guildford) and, less frequently, No.187 (Dorking, Reigate & Crawley). Occasionally Nos. 188, 197, 198 or 199 are used.
- If you prefer to use a Street Atlas, you will find that two of the three Surrey Street Atlases on sale do include grid references. They are the 'Surrey Phillips 0/S', and 'A-Z for Surrey'. However you will first have to locate the appropriate page from the description of the walk.
RAMBLE REMINDERS
- Car parks may charge a fee - many NT ones do so to non-members
- Accidents can easily and suddenly happen, including on narrow, winding country lanes. Be aware, when crossing a road, that one walker can block the view of another. When it is necessary to walk on a road, please keep in single file on the right hand side of the road unless a sharp bend in the road so reduces visibility as to make it more advantageous to cross over, in which case do so in good time.
- Please keep in single file on paths across ploughed land and crops, including grass for mowing.
- Be prepared for rough and muddy ground and rain, with stout footwear and rainwear.
- Walks of 7.5 miles or less are generally half day and finish by 13:00 hrs. Those of 8 miles or more are full day.
- On whole day rambles, leaders will identify a convenient place for a picnic lunch. The walks often include a Pub at Lunch Break (PLB), but food cannot be guaranteed and you are advised to carry some food and drink which should not be consumed on pub premises. Many pubs are now crowded at lunchtime and are meeting popular demand by the provision of full meals. As a result it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain and consume quick service snacks within the 40 mins average break favoured by our leaders. Please bear that in mind when making your decisions. It helps our relationship with landlords if you remove muddy boots on entry or cover them with plastic bags.
- You can help the leader by making sure you do not get out of touch with the party, and letting him or her know if you are obliged to stop or break off before the end of the ramble.
- Walkers join rambles at their own risk.
- Dogs accompanying walkers must be kept on leads.
