Edward Molyneux is as far back as we can go. He is my Gt/Gt/Gt/Gt/Gt/Gt/Gt/Grandfather.

He was born about 1610/1612. Some documents refer to him as Edmund, some as Edward, this seems to be common with this name.

He did perhaps live on the border of Billinge because sometimes he is referred to as 'Edward of Up Holland' or 'Edward of Billinge'. Four of his eight children were baptised at Upholland.

The burial record says ' Edmond of Up Holland' in the year 1675 but his Will clearly states him as ' Edward of Up Holland ' .

On the 6.10.1633, an Edmund Molineux of Parish of Wigan (Up Holland at that time was in the ancient parish of Wigan) married Margaret Melling of the Parish of Halsall. This could be his marriage and his name recorded as Edmund, but it is not proven.

Margaret was buried 26.4.1697 at Up Holland and is mentioned in Edward's Will (which is referred to as a Nunct Will, which means it was dictated to a solicitor probably a short time before his death). He leaves to his son Henry, Twenty Shillings, Son George and William, Ten Shillings each, and the Remainder of his estate to Margaret Mollineux his wife. An Inventory of his goods amounted to £18.0.6d.

No research work has been done on George's two brothers Henry and William who are the only two surviving children, apart from George, mentioned in Edward's Will.

George Molyneux, the son of Edward would be my Gt/Gt/Gt/Gt/Gt/Gt/Grandfather bn.1636 of Up Holland and he had 3 wives. The first was Ellen Houghton m Upholland 1665, died in 1672, second was Elizabeth Bradshall m 1673 Upholland, died in 1710, and the third was Mary.....? m c 1711.

George married Mary shortly after the death of Elizabeth. The marriage to Mary has not yet been found. She must have been of child bearing age because she has a son Ellis or Elias who is born and baptised 16.1.1712. George would have been about 75 when Ellis was born. The Up Holland Parish Record Book says "Ellis son of George Mullinex Senior husbandman bapt. 16.1.1712 Up Holland ".

George had 9 children who were all baptised Upholland, with the exception of Martha.

James 1657, Anne 1659 d 2 mths, Nathanial 1664, Henry 1670,Martha c 1672, William 1674-1693, George 1675,Edwrd 1678, Ellis 1712

Old George died and was buried on 21.9.1713 at Up Holland.

Georges Will reads,

To his son James Mollineux, 10 shillings.

To his son Henry 10 shillings

To his son Nathanial 10 shillings

To daughter Martha Laithwaite 10 shillings

To son George 5 shillings, To son Edward 5 shillings

To youngest son Ellis Forty Pounds

His wife Mary Mollineux is mentioned.

The Will was dated l8th day of August 1713. Wife Mary and kinsman Lancelott Walker, Minister at Maghull (chapel) to be the sole executors of the will. Inventory of goods to the value of £116.10.6. Four money Bonds were mentioned in the inventory, two for £40.00 each, one for £10, money due without a bond £5.00.

Ellis Molyneux bapt.16.1.1712 at Up Holland, is my Gt/Gt/Gt/Gt/Gt/Grandfather. He was married at Walton-on-Hill (Walton Church) 2nd Jan 1730 to Martha Cropper, daughter of John Cropper, The register says he was ' of Everton'. He lived in the Fazakerleyl/Kirkby area and for many years was an Innkeeper. He was landlord of the "Wheatsheaf" in Kirkby in 1777.

He and Martha had 5 daughters and 3 sons. All baptised at St Chads Kirkby, Ellen 1731, George 1735,Elizabeth 1737, Mary 1740, Hannah 1743, Margaret 1745, John 1747, William 1752-1811.

It is difficult to ascertain who the daughters married, there are so many Molyneux females with the same names getting married and recorded in the Kirkby Registers.

We know that of the son's, John, a blacksmith, married Margaret Wilson at Walton in 1768. Also, son William, a blacksmith, married Alice Melling in 1774 at Walton, and she died in 1791 and is buried at Kirkby.

NEW INFORMATION : They had 4 children: Martha 1776-82, Dorothy 1778, William1780 and Martha 1783. He then married Jane Ashton, a widow, on the 3lst May 1795 at St. Peter's, Liverpool Children by the second marriage were Mary 1794, Elizabeth 1796 and Jane 1803.

Martha 1783 married John Simpson in 1826, but before that she had Elias 1810, William1815, John 1818, Catherine 1823 and James 1826. Elias married Margaret Glover from Huyton, Their child William Thomas married Elizabeth Knowles from Edge Hill, Liverpool. Their daughter Mary Molyneux married Henry Brook Martin and this line becomes Sue Jackmans line.

.And eldest son was George. Ellis was buried 12. 8.1799 at Kirkby. Martha was buried at St Chads Kirkby on 21 May 1781

George Molyneux is my Gt/Gt/Gt/Gt/Grandfather and was born on 4th Feb 1735 and baptised on 9.12.1735 at Kirkby. He was a Husbandman and at times, an innkeeper.

On the 24.4.1758 at Kirkby, he married Elizabeth Green bapt 1737. It is the first MOLYNEUX marriage to be recorded at St.Chad's, Kirkby

The children of George and Elizabeth were: Ellis 1758, Thomas c 1760 bur 1763, Thomas 1764, Elizabeth c 1766, Robert 1770, John 1772-1785, Martha 1774.

Thomas Molyneux of Fazackerly 1764 is the ancestor of Betty Molyneux Brown

Betty is the UK Representative of the International Molyneux Family Association.

Robert Molyneux 1770 continues my line.

From the Walton on the Hill Burials:

Elizabeth Molyneux of Fazakerley wife of George Molyneux and daughter of John Green, buried 4.2.1807 aged 70.

George Molyneux of Fazakerley son of Elias Molyneux by his wife Martha daughter of John Cropper buried l2th October 1810 aged 75.

Robert was born in 1770 and baptised at St Marys, Walton on the Hill on July 8th 1770.

On the 3rd April 1791, Robert married Ellen Caldwell at St James church Toxteth.

They had ten children, six sons and four daughters.

They were, Margaret 1791, Robert c1793, Elizabeth 1795. Ellen 1797,John 1799, Elias 1802,

Ellen 1809 married Henry Caddick, William married Ellen Draper, George married Elizabeth Caddick,

Thomas married Margaret Bibby. This line descends down to RON MOLYNEUX of Liverpool

Elias married his cousin, Julia Molyneux, daughter of Thomas Molyneux b1764 and Dorothy Squire b1765.

Their children were, Elizabeth b1826, John b1828, Dorothy b1831, Elias b1833, Hannah b1835, William b1837, Alice b1840 and Jane b1846. This line descends down to CAROL MASON of Birmingham

John married Ellen Banks, This is my line.

George Molyneux b1858 married Jane Harrison (his cousin) in 1887 (see HARRISON) at Sefton Church Jan 1887, and moved eventually from Browns Lane Netherton to Ledsons Cottage (now SteepleChase Cottage) in the centre of the Aintree Race course on Melling Rd.

John Molyneux b 1852 was my Gt/Grandfather. He was the first to marry in 1877. He married Elizabeth Moss at St Silas church, Pembroke Place on December 23rd. Elizabeth was from Widnes. Addresses they gave for the wedding were 56 Gill St for John and 68 Gt Newton St for Elizabeth. These streets were located by the Liverpool university buildings. Maybe both John & Elizabeth worked in the area. John's occupation was a carter. Alexander Moss and Ann Ball were the witnesses.

They lived at Aldams Grove off Westminster Rd Kirkdale, but by 1881 John and Elizabeth were living at 80 Selwyn St Kirkdale. There were three son's William b 1879, John b 1881 and George b 1885.

I spent years trying to find when John and Elizabeth died. They disappear from Selwyn St around 1915, but there were so many John and Elizabeth's in the death registers, it was difficult to identify them. It was searching for the death of Elizabeth (Dutton,Williams wife) that led me to them. I found that William's Elizabeth had died on 21st Feb 1900 age 78 at the Cottage Hospital Kirkby and I then checked the Kirkdale burial registers to see if she was buried there, and she was. When I found the grave, I found John and Elizabeth also buried there. Elizabeth had died age 60 at the Walton Workhouse/Hospital on 24th July 1915. John died May 1925 age 73.

William Molyneux b1879 disappears after 1901, but a William Molyneux of the same age appears at Ellis Island in 1919 as a crew member, sailing from Liverpool to New York. This coupled with old photographs of an unknown man in Merchant Navy uniform suggests it might be him. Have yet to find his death.

UPDATE 2003 Believe William married a Mary Jackson in 1916 and that he died in Southport in 1941. No children as far as I know. Resarched by Alan Molyneux of Kirkdale.

John Molyneux, my Gt/Gt/Gt/Grandfather was born in 1799 at Knowsley on 30th Nov, and baptised at St Chads on the 29th Dec.

Johns occupation was a Wheelwright and on the 4th Dec 1826, he married Ellen Banks, daughter of Richard and Margaret Banks, at Holy Trinity church Liverpool.

They had six daughters and one son. They were: William b1827, Alice b1829, Ellen b1831, Margaret b1832, Margaret b1835, Elizabeth b1838, Jane b1845 d1832.

Jane never married and died in Nov 1917 at Little Brook Cottages, Kirkby

Elizabeth married John Bolton and Alice also married a John Bolton.

According to the records of Sefton Church, Alice married John Bolton, son of John Bolton (blacksmith) on 27th Jan 1852. Witnesses were Joseph Bromilow and Ellen Bromilow.

Elizabeth married John Bolton, son of John Bolton (Labourer) on 20th Aug 1860, witnesses were Thomas Bolton and Alice Molyneux.

This has always been a bit of a puzzle! Could they have been the same John Bolton? If Alice the witness is the same Alice, should not her name be Alice Bolton? or was that a mistake?

However, in 1881 there is an Alice & John Bolton, living in Melling, of the right age, no children though.

In the early years 1840/50's the family lived in Sefton, Ellen was a servant at a local farm, and William age 14 was also working at a farm. Ellen married James Plumbley at St Thomas church Melling on 9th April 1855 and this line descends down to Pauline Hurst of Widnes

Margaret b 1835 married Robert Harrison on 15th May 1855 at St Nicholas church Liverpool. They had six children and this became the HARRISON family line.

John and Ellen eventually moved to Little Brook Kirkby along with daughter Jane and Granddaughter Ellen.

John the Wheelwright died 3rd Dec 1878 age 79. Ellen his wife died a year later on 26th Dec 1879 age 72. They are both buried at Sefton Church Sefton.

Jane continued to live at Little Brook until she died 19th Nov 1917 at the West Derby Union Infirmary. Jane is buried at St Chads Kirkby.

Update 26/11/02 Ellen Harrison/Molyneux is also buried with Jane at St Chads.

Ellen died in 1927

William Molyneux my GT/GT/Grandfather, Born in Netherton and Baptised 1st April 1827

Since the first readable census of 1841, William has never been recorded living with John (the wheelwright) and Ellen Molyneux. All records show that Williams parents were John & Ellen Molyneux, but there were two John & Ellen Molyneux's, one at Sefton and one at Hightown Crosby. Both families had a William born 1827, so which family is he from?

It seems most likely that William is from the Sefton family for the following reasons:

John and Ellen attended Sefton church and were buried at Sefton church.

William was baptised at Sefton and was married at Sefton.

I can find no trace of the Hightown family using a church.

There are no Alice's in the Hightown family.

When Jane Molyneux died in 1917 (Williams sister) The wife of Williams son, George, Jane (Harrison) Molyneux was the informant. So she obviously knew Jane to be Williams sister.

On Williams marriage certificate, it states that his father John Molyneux was a wheelwright. The other John was a labourer on the 1841 census.

On 22nd April 1851, William married Elizabeth Dutton b1822 at Sefton church in April 1851. Witnesses were John Wharton and Alice Molyneux.

There were 3 children, John b 5th Feb 1852, Jane b 25th June 1855, and George b 1858. Unfortunately, Jane died 7 months later in Jan 1856.

The first known address for them was in the 1861 census, when they are living in Sandy Lane Walton on the Hill. This will be the Sandy Lane in Aintree off Long Lane, as this was known as Walton in those days.

There were farms around there then and William most likely worked at one of them.

However William died in 1865 and is buried at Sefton, along with daughter Jane. I have visited Sefton Church several times but have never found the grave of William, Jane or John & Ellen, although they are in the Sefton registers. Students have catalogued most of the graves at Sefton (Monumental Inscriptions) but they do not show up there either.

There were two son's, John b1852 and George b1858

By 1871 the rest of the family had moved to Bridge Lane Netherton, near Sefton Church. And then to Browns Lane Netherton.

Update 26/11/02 George Molyneux b1885 married Annie Ray b1883 in 1907 at St Marys Church Kirkdale. They lived at 10 Iris St Kirkdale and had a daughter, Mona b1908. George was a railway worker at Bankhall and died in 1927. Annie (RAY) Molyneux died in 1976, (see RAY family) And I have recently found a George Harry Molyneux and a Violet Molyneux in the 1938 electoral roll, and an Alan Molyneux in the 1970 rolls All living at 10 Iris St. There is no Iris St after 1972 so I assume it was knocked down along with other streets.
