Our first walk of the 1997 holiday involved climbing the Mont Rouges and then continuing to the Col de Riedmatten, This was completed on the 7.7.97 on a spectacular day with blue skies and brillant sunshine. The weather had been poor for a few weeks before and the mountains had a fresh covering of snow despite it being summer. On the 12.7.98 we climbed the Pas de Chevres which enjoys very similar views. The impressive form of Mont Collon (3637m) shown in the 1st photograph and the Pigne d'Arolla are visible during both climbs. |

Across the Val d'Arolla the Aiguille de la Tsa (3668m) and the distant Bouquetins (3838m), see the fifth photograph, added to the alpine granduer with their covering of snow further enhancing their character. The Aigulle is shown in the 2nd photograph. |

From the Col de Riedmatten and more clearly from the Mont Rouges the distant distinctive peak of the Matterhorn is seen. The Matterhorn is also seen from the Pas de Chevres |

Perhaps, one of the most spectacular peaks in the Alps the Mont Blanc de Cheilon (3870m) dominates the view westward from the ridge between the Val des Dix and Val de Arolla. It has a stunning near vertical north face and fine cornices. Below lies the Glacier de Cheilon. |

This view looks across to Mont Collon with the Bouquentins to the left handside. The climb takes about 2.5 hours to the Col or Pas and is well worth doing as for relatively little effort the scenic rewards are immense. |
