Building a 1/16 King Tiger

Part 2 :- Body & turret build

STAGE 9

To make the road wheels with the space in the middle to accept the track guides you need to follow this procedure.

1. Place the wheel A5 face down with the bush & screw holes facing up.
2. Place the bush into the plastic wheel A5
3. Place one of the metal road wheels over the the wheel so that the plastic wheel sits inside the metal wheel & the screw holes & bush still show.
4. The next metal wheel will sit on top of the three screw holes
5. Place the plastic wheel A6 into the metal wheel with the screw holes lined up
6. Screw the wheel together.

stages in making the wheels

STAGE 10 & 11

These stages I have left out as I will fit the wheels after I have painted the chassis & wheels int here final colours.

STAGE 12 to 14

I came across a problem when I came to fit the turret bottom & screw it to the turret base.  The screws will not stay tight & work loose when the turret bottom is moved so making it impossible to stay in an upright position.  I used some thread lock in the threads & then tightened the screws so that the turret bottom stays put in any position.

STAGE 15

A small amount of filler is required on the gun barrel to remove seam lines & gaps in the barrel.

STAGE 16

The only thing is to take care with is with the hinges on the rear hatch.  The best way is when you come to fit the hatch to the rear panel fit one of the hinges G25 first & let it dry. Then fit the hatch on the rear panel & then glue the hinges G25 & G21. Every so often just test the hatch to make sure it is not stuck.

STAGES 17 to 20

The only deviation was not to fit the following parts as they will be painted later & fitted when the hull has been painted in camoflage colours.

B4,B6,B17,B23,B33 & B37

STAGES 21 to 22

The only deviation was not to fit the following parts as, like in stage 20,  they will be painted later & fitted when the hull has been painted in camoflage colours.

STAGE 23

The instructions say to use a hammer to put the pins in but I would say that unless you are very careful then do not do it. I tried at first & the photo below left shows what happened when I tried to use a hammer. The pin "chewed" the end of the track so making it unuseable.  The best thing to put the pins in is with a flat piece of metal or hard plastic so you can feel the resistance of the pin & if needs be guide it through the holes.
