The Allotment
Check Out The Benefits.
A great deal of satisfaction can be gained from growing
plants and vegetables.
I enjoy cooking and it is even more enjoyable knowing
that I have grown most of the ingredients.
I am also a strong advocate of organic vegetable production.
To that end we do not use any synthetic chemicals or
fertilizers on our plot.
It is quite a lot of work but regular short visits are,
I believe, the key to success.
I share the plot with three other people.
We have worked the plot for about 4 years now and it
is getting more manageable each season.
A View of our Allotment
Here
is a view of the allotment taken during September 2004.
The large foreground plants are globe artichokes.
Note the use of grass cuttings for a mulch.
This enriches the ground and keeps weeds down.
You can just see a large sunflower plant on the left.
The home made shed is in the distance.
We have two adjacent plots.
What you can see is about 1/4 of our total land.
Here
you can see Mr. Lowe with one of his amazing sunflowers. The diameter of
the sunflower head was about 12 inches (that is about 30cm)
The thickness of the stem was as thick as your wrist.
Here
is some of the produce from 2004. As you can see there is quite a variety.
Red Onions, Squash, Jerusalem Artichokes, Parsnips, Leeks, Apples, Garlic
and Celeriac are but a selection. Did you know that Jerusalem Artichokes
contain a sugar that is tolerated by diabetics?
