Synoptic Situation at 0600 01/01/1963          next day

High Pressure extends from the Great Lakes through Greenland to W Russia,
with centre of 1044mb over E Greenland.  Troughs moved SE across
Scandinavia.  Low, 988mb, just W of Portugal is moving NE.  Low, 996mb, SW
of Ireland has moved W a little.  Shallow lows have moved E across France
with one centre, 1004mb, now over N Italy.  Troughs still affect S England
and N France.

Weather over the British Isles:

The strong easterly persisted all the period and skies were cloudy except in
the far N.  Diurnal variation of temperature was small.

Heavy rain affected parts of the far SW:  Guernsey 8mm, Plymouth 13mm and St
Mawgan 18mm, both with snow late in period, Culdrose 22mm.  Snow fell in
some SE and E  areas: Gatwick 5mm, Boscombe Down 17mm,  Newcastle 5mm,
Leuchars 1mm, Glasgow trace and Roches Point 32mm (rain).  Snow showers
affected many other stations.

Weather over the rest of Europe:

Rain affected parts of W and S France and light snow fell along the trough
from SE England to Poland.  Rain/snow moved SE across Scandinavia.

Maxima:  Oslo -11C, Stockholm -11C, Helsinki -17C, but the far NW was milder
2 to 3C as the W winds encroached.  Moscow -16C, Murmansk -10C, Minsk -14C,
Warsaw -11C, Belgrade 4C, Prague -6C, Berlin -6C, Cologne -4C, Munich 0C,
Paris 2C, Brussels 0C, Bordeaux 13C, Madrid 8C, Nimes 10C and Venice 2C.

Minima (0600 GMT):  Oslo -5C, Stockholm -6C, Helsinki -9C, Minsk -23C,
Warsaw -20C,  Berlin -13C, Belgrade 1C, Hanover -12C, Paris -6C,
Brussels -5C, Brest 2C, Bordeaux 6C, Madrid 6C, Nimes 2C and Venice 5C.
Coastal Norway was -9C in far S but typically +1 to +2C further N.


Cold with slight frost and maxima near zero.  Further snow in the S and E
where falls may be moderate with heavy drifting in gale force E winds.  A
few bright intervals in the far NW.
Outlook:  Possibility of blizzards in the south.

Verkhoiansk -52C, Chesterfield -35C.  A large Atlantic storm, off E USA, was
forcing cold air far S over the E states: Toronto -23C, Boston -18C,
Pittsburgh -15C, Charleston -2C, but milder in the W: Fort Worth 2C, Rapid
City -4C, then cold again in W Canada: Fort Smith -40C, Fort Simpson -33C
and Fairbanks(Alaska) -36C.  Vancouver was 5C
