Synoptic Situation at 0600 20/01/1963            next day

High, 1040mb, off coast of Norway, is moving slowly SE.  A marked trough
which moved W over S areas of the Br.Isles will weaken, but pressure will
remain low SW of Ireland and in the Mediterranean.  Strong ESE winds cover
the Br.Isles with gales in exposed places.  N winds persist over much of
central and E Scandinavia.

Weather over the British Isles:

Snow showers fell in many S places with drifting, but amounts varied -
Birmingham had 6mm equivalent, St Mawgan 9mm, Culdrose 4mm, Manchester 2mm,
and Watnall 4mm.  Scilly was -3C,  and wet bulb of -5C, at 1200, with a 26 kn
ENE wind.  At 0600, Newcastle was reporting a 45kn wind from the east

Birmingham -1C, Watnall -1C, Manchester -1C, Newcastle 2C, Dyce 3C,

Minima:  Cloud and wind held  temperatures up a little . Gatwick -7C,
Guernsey -8C, Plymouth -6C, Scilly -2C, Cardiff -7C, Birmingham -6C (with
snow and drizzle), Watnall -5C, Manchester -3C, Newcastle 1C, Dyce 1C,
Eskdalemuir -2C, Glasgow 1C, Wick 3C, Lerwick 3C, Tiree 1C, Belfast -2C,
Birr -4C and Valentia -3C.

Weather over the rest of Europe:

A trough moving SSW from Scandinavia took snow across many E areas reaching
from NE Scotland to Denmark to Poland by 0600.  Clearer and drier weather
followed.  Troughs in the far S produced some rain/snow in parts of SW
France, S Italy and the Balkans.

Maxima:  Oslo -6C, Stockholm 2C, Helsinki -1C, Murmansk -7C in a 35kn N
wind, Moscow -20C, Minsk -10C, Belgrade -9C, Warsaw -16C, Berlin -11C,
Paris -9C, Brussels -8C, Brest -4C, Bordeaux -6C, Madrid 8C, Nimes 6C,
Venice -5C and Rome 6C.

Minima:  Oslo -12C, Stockholm -9C, Helsinki -11C, Minsk -13C, Warsaw -12C,
Belgrade -9C, Berlin -14C, Brussels -5C, Brest -10C, Bordeaux 3C, Madrid 7C,
Nimes 5C, Venice -10C and Rome 2C.  Don't forget these are the 0600 temperatures
Bordeaux is not a mistake.


Scotland will have some showers of rain/snow in the E.  Snow showers over N
Ireland, NW England and N Wales will die out.  Other places will be cloudy
with a little snow or freezing rain at times.  Very cold.
