4 January 1963
"The thaw reached parts of the Midlands, the South and West, but it was too
late to save most of the next day's sports fixtures. All but five of the 32
F.A. Cup third round ties were postponed - a record - and for the second
successive week the football pools were cancelled. The Ministry of
Agriculture advised farmers to shoot house sparrows on sight now that they
were in their hundreds seeking food in farmyards."
As reported in the Manchester Guardian booklet "The Long Winter 1962-63"
