Synoptic Situation at 0600 on 7/12/1962
High, 1033mb, centred S Germany, drifting SE and declining. Low, 979mb, 300
miles S of Iceland moving quickly north. Low moving E into W Russia. Warm
front is approaching W Ireland and the Hebrides.
Weather over the British Isles:
Freezing fog persisted all the period in parts of the SE whilst other areas
had some sun: Guernsey 7.3 hrs, Gatwick 6.4 hrs, Cardiff 4.5 hrs, Birmingham
4.9 hrs, Manchester 6.1 hrs, Newcastle 3.2 hrs, Dyce 5.6 hrs. Other places
further N and W had little or none: Wick 0.7 hrs, Belfast 1.2 hrs, Belmullet
3.2 hrs. Winds were calm in the SE and light southerlies elsewhere. Fog
reformed over much of England and Wales overnight. Many stations in the SE,
E, Midlands, and NE were reporting ground frozen. There was some light rain
and drizzle in the far N and W of Scotland - the wettest station being Tiree
Maxima: Gatwick 4C, London Airport -2C, Guernsey 8C, Ross-on-Wye 0C,
Birmingham 6C, Manchester 5C, Dishforth -3C, Eskdalemuir 5C, Prestwick 9C,
Belfast 8C, Plymouth 9C and Valentia 12C.
Minima were below zero over much of England and Wales, except the far SW.
Gatwick -4C, Ross-on-Wye -5C, Cardiff -1C, Birmingham -7C, Manchester -2C,
Newcastle 0C, Dyce -1C. Other areas in the N and W stayed above zero:
Eskdalemuir 3C, Prestwick 7C, Lerwick 6C, Tiree 9C, Belfast 6C, Valentia 9C
and Plymouth 3C.
Weather over the rest of Europe:
The only significant rain moved south across Scandinavia on a cold front,
and there was some snow as a warm front moved east across W Russia. Drizzle
was reported in N Germany and Denmark. Many areas away from these fronts
were sunny by day and clear at night.
Maxima were below zero in E France, S Germany into Poland and Rumania and
ahead of the front crossing W Russia : Moscow -5C, Riga 6C, Berlin -1C (with
drizzle), Brussels 10C, Paris 1C, Bordeaux 7C, Nimes 7C, Madrid 4C. Coastal
Norway and Denmark were 7 to 8C.
Minima were below zero over a large area: Berlin -4C, Hanover -8C,
Brussels -1C, Tours -4C, Bordeaux -4C, Madrid -3C. Inland parts of S Norway
and Sweden reported -2 to -5C rising above zero near the front and then
dropping in the N and N Finland to -5 to -9C. Coastal stations in Norway
were in the range 3 to 7C, except N of the front, Tromso -5C. Iceland was
in the range 4 to 8C.
Forecast for tomorrow:
Mild S winds will soon affect all areas but some eastern and midland areas
will be rather cold because of the frozen ground. Rain is expected in the
NW followed by a clearance in the morning.
