The Original EngineWhen the car was bought the engine was an 18GG engine fitted with a gas flowed head and K&N filters (the type in the original housing). The head was supplied in Jan 2000 by John Worsley with 59350 mile on the clock. The block is thought to be original, but has been over bored by 20 thousandths (only found out after first head removal). Presumably the head was an exchange unit. The car ran well, but it quickly became apparent that a lot of oil was being burnt. In fact it turned out to be about 100 miles per pint of oil. If the breathing system was disconnected from the carbs then this dropped somewhat, but was still high. After much consultation it became clear that the way forward was to think of an engine rebuild. The plan was this. A second hand engine was sourced. This was dropped in over Easter 2004, but this went wrong!. The original engine was then to be stripped to be rebuilt. It was, however, found to have a cracked block, which meant it was scrap! So the block from the second engine, with the best parts of each, and new parts where needed, was used for the rebuild. |
