Steve Lewis ARPS
Supported by Stephen’s famous ‘Big Box of Prints’, in this presentation Stephen discusses his approach to landscape photography, his use of large format cameras, and the technical and aesthetic qualities of the images. As the discussion usually centres on new images produced in the previous twelve months this talk has become an annual event with a number of clubs.
An Associate of the Royal Photographic Society, Stephen has been photographing the landscape of Britain for over 25 years. Closely associated with the Snowdonia National Park in particular, his knowledge and understanding of the area have allowed him to produce images unrivalled in their portrayal of the ephemeral light and wild atmosphere of that special part of the world. His work is an intimate and lovingly crafted celebration of wild landscapes. Stephen is a contributing photographer to various image libraries, inlcuding the Photo Library of Wales and This England. He hosts photographic workshopsin Snowdonia and around the U.K, and is a regular speaker at photographic societies. His first book, "Private views of Snowdonia"was published in 2005. Stephen is also a long-time member of the Snowdonia Society, a charitable trust which campaigns on issues affecting the national park. The society publishes a regular magazine, which often features Stephen's work. Stephen's commercial work is undertaken using digital capture and workflow, based around Nikon cameras. For his personal work, Stephen uses, and is a keen advocate of large format cameras used in conjunction with transparency film. He feels that the outstanding detail and superb tonal quality LF cameras produce is the perfect vehicle for the light, colour, tone and texture which characterise his work. "The real beauty and wonder of our landscape lies in the details: the shapes textures, tones and, above all, the light. Bring these to the fore, give them context, and you are one step closer to finding the true heart of the landscape, when it will whisper its secrets, and allow a glimpse something truly magical." |
