This Internet Book is taken, in the major part, from a book commissioned by Chief Fire Officer Lambert to celebrate the SFB centenary in 1969, which was entitled “Sheffield Fire Brigade - A Brief History”, and the periods from the 'Early History' through to '1923-1937' are taken from that book. However, the period 1937 onwards has been the subject of further extensive research and, as yet, has not been completed.
By publishing this material as an Internet Book it is my intention to add any material you wish supply to the book to extend its coverage of the history of Sheffield's Fire Brigades. This book is therefore a living document. Furthermore, I have no intention in making a profit from this material, and the information is supplied for the use of anyone who has an interest in the history of Sheffield.
If you wish to add to this book please contact me via the email address tmullins@tiscali.co.uk
Acknowledgements:
I would like to thank the following people for their assistance in gathering the information required to edit the original book and add content to period 1937 - 1948
Ken Mettam, ex Divisional Commander, West Division, for his loan of his original book entitled "Sheffield Fire Brigade - A Brief History. And more importantly, the later provision of his written text which formed part of the time capsule buried in Wellington Street Fire Station in 1984, which detailed the period 1974 - 1984, without which, the 1974 onwards sections of this book would never have been written.
Jane Salt, Sheffield Star, for setting me on the 1939 to 1945 information trail, for supplying news items about this period, and for allowing me to research the Sheffield Star archives.
Dave Lockwood, for supplying an original copy of the out of print book "Sheffield at War", from which much of the 1939-1945 material originates.
John Hague, for supplying many of the late 1950's and early 1960's photographs
Robin Wiltshire, Sheffield Archives, for all his help and assistance in guiding me through researching the Sheffield Police and Sheffield Fire Brigade files.
Nigel Kind (Snowy), for providing the initial photo of Sheffield Fire Brigade Roll of Honour, and his past enthusiasm for all thing fire brigade.
Tony Hunter, for his kind offer to allow me to view the Sheffield Fire and Police Museum archives.
