Unfortunately the planned demonstration of beehives in action could not take place because of wet weather; it is hoped to be able to reschedule this for spring 2011. However, Sandra Rickwood kindly invited those who had planned to attend round to her house, where we viewed an excellent DVD on the life cycle of the honey bee, as well as various items of beekeeping paraphernalia. Moreover we were plied with tea and cake - including honey cakes of course, courtesy of Marion Cooper! This was followed by a "Q&A" session, with answers supplied by expert beekeepers Sandra and Marion – did you know, for example, that honey bees secrete wax from glands between the segments on the underside of their abdomen?
Thanks to Sandra for turning what could have been a complete washout into an entertaining and informative event – and we look forward to seeing the real bees (and to donning those natty sting-proof suits) next time.
