Run Ashore Rituals

There is a small series of traditional dances done at the close of an evening’s drinking, by which time the songs many of which were very bawdy would have driven out those of a less robust disposition, so that the following was unlikely to give anyone offence.

The Chelsea Pensioner

A Mime - Required a chair with two arms, in which an inebriated sailor will sit. Often such chair is placed on a small able, barely large enough to support it.
The sailor will then demonstrate the use of the ‘wheel chair’ on parade, saluting on the march past, taking it up hill, (with difficulty) and down hill, spitting on his hands before using them as brakes. Whilst retaining his alance on the table.
