Sailors are
by circumstances a male orientated group, who (particularly in the earlier
centuries) spent months away from the tempering effects of the fairer
sex. Consequently they freely used language (in its true, proper and
uncensored context) without consideration to the sensibilities of others.
Often such language does
permeate into these songs, though more often the songs are quite acceptable
to all types of society. A sailors repertoire, often contained both
censored and uncensored versions of his favorite songs.
Where such variations
are known, it is the policy of this site; to present them all without
alteration or censorship. That is to show what was actually sung
by the RN sailor. This
ubiqutous approach has the advantage of allowing the reader or performer
to select the example most suited to his needs.
Therefore
please note these songs are as collected
no attempt has been made to edit the songs
You
will get it as it was sung!
To have attempted to
edit or prissy up these items would be to corrupt the historical heritage
that I am trying to preserve.
That said little bad language is generally found in the true matelot's
favourite dit's.
