2008 Lectures and EventsOur lecture programme for 2008 included the following presentations:
Those who think of the UK motor industry history as being something vaguely rooted elsewhere should think again. The displays at Kelham Island Museum show the importance of the early industry in South Yorkshire. Graeme Walker's presentation is on Caudwell's Mill at Rowsley, the unique, grade II listed historic roller flour mill. Powered by water from the river Wye, a mill has stood on the site for at least 400 years. The rail line from Dore to Chinley was a massive undertaking, involving two tunnels. The railway was opened by the Midland Railway Company in 1894, with Cowburn & Totley tunnels together totalling 9,900 yards long, some 25% of the line’s length. Clive Leivers’ talk will remind us of the part played by the navvies Chesterfield has been through many changes over the last 100 years; David Howes will recount the history of some of the businesses in the town, recalling many now-lost but famous names. A welcome return from Peter Kennett following his talk to the Society last year. Peter brings us up to date with the recent progress in restoration of the Vulcan. Mike Hayden as Planning Officer for CBC has dealt with many of the older industrial sites as plans are put forward for regeneration; the last 20 years particularly have presented many challenges and opportunities For membership details, and for further information on any of these meetings do please contact us. |
