2008 Lectures and Events

Our lecture programme for 2008 included the following presentations:

  • Monday 14 January, 2008:  Malcolm Dungworth: "History of the Sheffield Motor Industry"
  • Those who think of the UK motor industry history as being something vaguely rooted elsewhere should think again. The displays at Kelham Island Museum show the importance of the early industry in South Yorkshire.

  • Monday 11 February 2008:  Graeme Walker: "The History and Technology of Caudwell's Mill"
  • Graeme Walker's presentation is on Caudwell's Mill at Rowsley, the unique, grade II listed historic roller flour mill. Powered by water from the river Wye, a mill has stood on the site for at least 400 years.

  • Monday 10 March 2008:  AGM and Members' Evening..
  • Monday 14 April, 2008:  Clive Leivers: "The navvies who built the Dore-Chinley railway"
  • The rail line from Dore to Chinley was a massive undertaking, involving two tunnels. The railway was opened by the Midland Railway Company in 1894, with Cowburn & Totley tunnels together totalling 9,900 yards long, some 25% of the line’s length. Clive Leivers’ talk will remind us of the part played by the navvies

  • Monday 12 May 2008:  Visit to Pleasley Pit. A welcome return for members and guests to see the extent of regeneration and restoration,
  • Monday 8 September 2008:  David Howes: "Chesterfield Shops - 1850-1950".
  • Chesterfield has been through many changes over the last 100 years; David Howes will recount the history of some of the businesses in the town, recalling many now-lost but famous names.

  • Monday 13 October 2008:  Peter Kennett: "The Vulcan Bomber project".
  • A welcome return from Peter Kennett following his talk to the Society last year. Peter brings us up to date with the recent progress in restoration of the Vulcan.

  • Monday 10 November 2008:  Mike Hayden: "The regeneration of Chesterfield's industrial areas"
  • Mike Hayden as Planning Officer for CBC has dealt with many of the older industrial sites as plans are put forward for regeneration; the last 20 years particularly have presented many challenges and opportunities

  • Monday 8 December 2008:  Christmas meeting
SUMMER VISITS PROGRAMME In addition to the above Lectures Programme,  visits to local sites of current interest and research have been  organised, restricted only to Members and their guests. Details are as follows:.
  • Visits: Next Visit: Saturday 26 September - Clay Mills Pumping Station, an outstanding Victorian industrial monument. Beam engines by Gimson of Leicester. generators, historic workshop. More information from Bryan Dick - 01246 205720
