2009 Lectures and Events

During 2009, our Programme includes:

  • Monday 12 January, 2009  Malcolm Dungworth: History of Sheffield auto industry: contnued 

    Malcolm Dungworth continues his account of the Sheffield auto industry. 

  • Monday 9 February, 2009  Brian Key: The histpry of the Butterley Company 

    A welcome visit from Brian Key who will outline the history of this pioneering company founded in 1790

  • Monday 9 March, 2009  AGM and presentation by Ruth Gordon on aspects of media held within the County archives 
  • Monday 20 April, 2009 

    Keith Drury: A brand new A1 Pacific loco- the Tornado Project. 

    Keith will give details of the amazing project to build this new steam loco.

  • Monday 11 May, 2009.  Mary Wilde: Linacre Over Lead Smelt Mill. 

    Details of the survey carried out to reveal details of the Linacre Over mill as part of a project for Sheffield University.

  • Monday 14 September, 2009.  Joan Unwin: Aspects of the Company of Cutlers of Hallamshire. 

    A welcome visit from the archivist for the Cutlers Company.

  • Monday 12 October, 2009.  Wendy Freer: History of Framework Knitting in the East Midlands. 

    Exploring the background to the growth of framework knitting in the wider area.

  • Monday 9 November, 2009.  Peter Greaves: Why the lead miners looked to Chesterfield. 

    Peter will recount part of the historical background and relationships within the Bonsall lead mining activities

  • Monday 14 December, 2009.  Chrismas meeting - seasonal talks from members on their own areas of research 

    An informal look at some answers to transport engineering questions before the times of Brindley and Stephenson through to the end of the 19th century

  • In addition to the above Lectures Programme, visits to local sites of current interest and research are to be organised, restricted to Members and their guests.
