Burton Waters near Lincoln, Bardney Lock and Boston Marina are all an hour’s drive from my home, but Boston does have certain advantages as far as I’m concerned. First is security - we are completely fenced in with 24/7 CCTV coverage. Secondly - it is next to the Grand Sluice so trips out into the Wash or trips inland up the Witham are both available. There is a chandlery next to the moorings and we are well provided for with shower/toilet facilities. Fresh water and shore power are available. There is also the Marine Tavern beside the marina which does very nice meals!! On the down side, we are only able to be there from April to the end of October as sluicing operations during the winter floods cause frequent and rapid water level changes. Mind you, but I can find warmer things to do in the         
Having got myself established on my berth, it was time for an exploratory trip or two to see the sights on the lower Witham and to get the feel of my new craft. Even on the short trip from the Grand Sluice to my marina berth, it was obvious that she was sluggish compared to the lightweight, outboard powered Orkney I was used to.
I fired up the Watermota, cast off and slipped her into reverse. Nothing happened ! B***** !! A few more attempts and it became clear that the gearbox on the Enfield outdrive was not co-operating. This was a good
