Training Fixtures Parents Events Club Kit

The support of parents for junior athletes is vitally important and the club recognises the effort that parents are making for their children when bringing them to the training sessions & events etc. The club also actively encourages & welcomes the involvement of parents in all of the clubs activities should they wish to become more involved.

What all parents should do / what’s expected.

The parent plays a key role in encouraging the junior athlete and praising their efforts, progress and achievements. Junior athletes will all have very different fitness starting points, biological development age, training age & very different growth & rate of improvement etc and it is the coach’s job to recognise and adjust to each junior athlete’s individual needs. Therefore as with all aspects of life parents should be careful never to compare to other junior athletes, brothers / sisters etc and should never be too ‘pushy’. Junior athletes will instinctively try their hardest and will instinctively work up to and within their physical limitations, they will react better to praise and encouragement and by learning that athletics is fun.

Code of conduct for parents.

As with for the junior athletes the club doesn’t feel that it should be necessary to have a long list of rules and regulations on how parents of junior athletes should conduct themselves. When joining the club however parents of junior athletes are shown and asked to sign a copy of the clubs code of conduct which gives basic guidelines on expected behaviour.

Questions / problems / worries or complaints...

Whilst the club endeavours to ensure that all junior athletes are getting the maximum possible support and enjoyment from their athletics we recognise that parents will sometimes be unsure or unhappy about their Childs activities / development.

The club’s aim is to give each individual the best possible support within the clubs framework & activities and you should therefore feel free to discuss any aspect of your child’s welfare with one of the clubs officials…

  1. Coach

Your child’s coach would usually be the first point of contact for any questions, problems, worries etc. Alternatively you can also contact the coaching co-ordinator Jenny Tinkler

  1. Welfare officer

The club has a welfare officer who can be contacted about any aspect of your child’s safety, security or any other aspect of their welfare.

Contact Paul Stratford

  1. Junior events co-ordinator

Any questions of worries about your Childs involvement in any events or welfare while at events please contact Paul Stratford

  1. Formal complaints.

We would hope that any complaints can be handled informally with the relevant club official and this should always be your first course of action. However should circumstances arise where you feel it is necessary to escalate a problem and make an official complain to the club then these should be addressed in writing to the club secretary, contact John Russell

How to get more involved.

It’s important to remember that any athletics club is basically a non profit making group of like minded people who try to organise activities for the benefit of all of the clubs members. As such all the clubs activities and very existence relies on the time and dedication of volunteers.

There are many ways in which parents can be more involved with their children’s athletics or other aspects of the clubs activities…

Become a volunteer:

Even if you don’t have a lot of spare time or can’t make a regular commitment then why not volunteer to be a marshal at one of the clubs events, it’s a great way to watch & be involved in any race day activities and makes a valuable contribution to the club. In addition the club also needs the support of volunteers to assist with providing race day refreshments and tuck shops on training nights.

To become a volunteer please contact John Russell

Become a runner:

Are you a runner yourself or would you like to try running? The club welcomes and encourages athletes of all ages and abilities and rather than just standing watching your children on training nights why not take advantage of the time and do something for yourself. There are usually other parents (of all ages and ability) who would welcome some company on anything from slow a jog round the park to a training session on the track.

To find out if there are other parents / club member you could run with please contact Barry Forster

Become a social member:

In addition to full club membership the club also has a membership category for social members; where for a small cost parents can get almost all the benefits of full membership but aren’t registered for competitions etc. This is a good way for parents to be kept fully informed of all the clubs activities, be copied on communications, have a voice on how the club is run / voting rights and allows them to stand for election to the committee if they wished etc.

Becoming a social member also means that you would be making a small (but very usefully) financial contribution to the running of the club.

To find out more about social membership please contact John Russell
