"Why, when you know the moon is an atmospherically challenged, barren, lifeless rock, do you wish to send a man there, Mr President?" The answer might have been frightening in itself.

We can all ascertain from that cold war era, how a sense of one-upmanship was purveyed, and in some pseudo-political power struggle there might have been some advantages. Yet on the universal exploration front they were found to be noticeable by their absence.

So for years man struggled with an impossible enigma. He wished to send men into space - but found this fundamental problem in his way: He had to defy gravity on short journeys, and special relativity on long journeys. Yet it would appear, man in his infinite wisdom refused point blank to face either, what one can only assume, to him, were unsolvable problems. Therefore, unperturbed by universal law, man continued with his epic acts of defiance.

He would at this point continue to attempt to attack a problem he believed could not be breeched. Trouble really flared for mankind the moment he launched his first rocket.

Susceptible to the laws of gravity - mankind needed to build a bigger , more powerful rocket. But that in itself became problematic. The bigger the rocket, the more fuel it needed, the more fuel it needed the heavier it became! And that analogy continues today.

If we momentarily accelerate ourselves forwards somewhat, and view the space shuttle, one can be nothing other than awe inspired by the huge capacity of fuel needed to push that monster skywards. On board are few people, and an insignificant payload; that really does not tustify its huge expense. And now they're talking of building a new space station up there, which will cost an absolute fortune, serve no significant purpose and advance our understanding of universal law not one iota. Where we went wrong was to observe an event and naturally think it a soluble problem.

Mankind witnessed them evil rockets of the German war machine race towards British soil and tried to apply lateral thought. Mankind believed he had solved the problem of space travel - even though his own laws of physics told him he hadn't. It really is rather remarkable if one thinks carefully about it for just a second.

If we take time out, and think of a science fiction programme: Star Trek, we hear that famous phrase from Scotty: "You can'eny defy the laws of physics, Captain!" And on first assumption this might seem an accurate statement. Yet if science believes this, then why try and breech the laws of physics with a rocket?

It just dosen't make sense! We have already said, the bigger the rocket the more fuel it uses, the more fuel it uses the heavier it becomes: Then the problem of special relativity kicks in even if we make it into space. The faster the rocket moves the more susceptible it becomes to time frames, and the faster it moves the stronger these forces become, bearing in mind a body of mass is measured by its resistance to acceleration.

So we might ask ourselves once again, why pursue this act of folly? We have already stated maybe because mankind made a clinical observation of surrounding events: He saw them damned rockets and excited himself to the point of madness. Like them early inventors up the castle wall mankind blinded himself with ambition, stopped thinking and simply followed his own insanity, even when the laws he had developed told him he couldn't. So what should he have done?

There really is nothing wrong with an observation, providing it's the right one: Mankind had seen other men's rockets and instinctively chased the rainbow.

He saw rockets, he wanted rockets. Scientists were captured and the salivating lunacy was unleashed.

But let's not forget our quote that runs through this work: We appear to have lost the power of wisdom through knowledge. Them few profound words have become immortal to us and taught us a very valuable lesson. We have learnt from them, mankind's growth is only stunted by his inability to think and his own narrow minded outlook. What mankind should have done as the second world war drew to a timely end, was realise he had made two observations, not one. We'll open our chapter on ufos later by discussing what fighter pilots witnessed: Inexplicable events termed simply Foo Fighters, and as both waring sides had seen these strange craft move along side their   Continued
