CASE STUDIES

On this property a large proportion of the 50 acre 5 year old cider orchard was dying.  The inspection revealed that despite a drainage scheme being in place prior to planting the orchard it had been poorly installed resulting in flooding due to inadequate backfalls.  The resulting inspection involved numerous trial excavations linked to a levels survey of the site.  A complete additional drainage scheme was required that needed to be tied into the existing scheme.

Cider Apple Orchard

(Land Drainage Inspections)

Outcomes & Benefits:-

A merger of two drainage schemes was proposed for implementation with no disruption to the healthy trees or the operation of the orchard providing the client immediate results coupled with a fruitful outlook.

Initial work comprised of scope of works, design of levels, outfall locations all in relation to existing golf course layout and contours.  The above information was formulated resulting in a three stage drainage programme.

Stage 1 was deep contour drainage and type of plant and machinery to be used. Stage 2 being fairway lateral drainage together with types of plant and machinery to be used and Stage 3 was sports turf drainage to greens together with plant and machinery to be used.

The course drainage was found to be inadequate resulting in the course being closed in wet winters.  Approximately 6 miles of extra drainage was added

18 hole golf course

(Project Supervision & Root Cause Analysis)

Outcomes & Benefits:-

One of the main achievement of this project was that normal play and championship matches were able to continue without interruption.

Our analysis showed that deep drainage was required to peg the water table.

“Having extended the drainage capabilities, the course has never been closed since, even during the wettest winters.  The Bowood Golf & Country Club has hosted The European Challenge Tour Championships on four consecutive occasions”

The client required the addition of a small lake to his estate.  On inspection, we advised that a flowing, curved, non symmetrical design to complement the surrounding countryside (taking into account fowl, fish and nesting birds)  would be the most suitable way forward.

This entailed soil analyses and assessment of input water flows to achieve the desired affect.

The project was implemented using our own in-house plant and machinery.

Private Amenity Shooting Lake

(Lake & Reservoir Design)

Outcomes & Benefits:-

The outcomes and benefits from this scheme was that the landowner encompassed a natural design to complement his estate at the same time enabling himself and his farming neighbours to enjoy new shooting and fishing activities.

Uniquely combining both pre and post construction drainage schemes in one design and build operation enabling the client to reduce project duration and costs.  Programming, co-ordination and supervision of two drainage outfits ensuring swift completion of each stage in tandem with the main pipeline construction team as an on-going forward operation.  This would involve calculation of pipe and backfill supply on a daily basis to forward material dumps.  Installation of temporary crossing structures and maintaining rapid re-connection of disrupted services.

33km Combined Pre and Post Construction Twin Header Drainage Scheme

(Project Supervision)

Outcomes & Benefits:-

The combination of both pre and post construction drainage enabled the client to significantly reduce project duration and costs.  Utilising Nigel Anstee’s valuable agricultural farming background a positive relationship with the landowners was maintained often resolving day to day problems and concerns without impacting on the main pipeline construction project.

This was a typical agricultural drainage scheme carried out for the client.  The scheme was designed to cater for a change from cereal to a grass and animal stocking rotation.

Agricultural Drainage Scheme

(Land Drainage Design)

Outcomes & Benefits:-

The outcomes and benefits of this scheme was that the landowner was able to farm successfully an area of heavy Wiltshire clay previously farmed on a ridge and furrow system to now being able to crop and stock the land throughout the year.

The client required an irrigation lake for intensive horticultural growing.   We were asked to design and implement the project.  This design entailed a natural clay soil construction being totally off stream and being filled by pump and pipe work from a nearby stream.

With existing ground levels not suitable for conventional lake design, the construction had to be built off a contoured slope with final top water level being 14ft above lowest contour level. This construction involved a detailed key trench and clay compacted embankment to enclose the three open sides.

This required a very detailed compaction procedure to hold this amount of water above ground.

Lake Irrigation

(Lake & Reservoir Design)

Outcomes & Benefits:-

The outcomes and benefits of this scheme was that some 50 acres of land, being without any on-stream water supply, was able to convert to intensive vegetable growing.

The client required a pre construction drainage assessment to be carried out in advance of a 10km semi urban/agricultural pipeline diversion project.  Drainage proposals were designed for diverse locations such as country parks, amenity land, gardens, paddocks and arable land.

We continue to carry out drainage consultancy and remedial works for Esso Petroleum.

London Jetline Project

(Drainage Scheme Design & General Consultancy)

Outcomes & Benefits:-

Utilising our extensive experience of pipeline drainage projects the client was able to rely on our ability to combine close working relationships with client, main contractor and land owners to provide effective drainage solutions within the whole project.

The client required an ornamental Japanese water garden to be added to his estate grounds as a public attraction.  Before we could start, we had to investigate a source of water.  Lord Pembroke was aware that there was a water source which could be used for this garden but the location of it was unknown.  After extensive investigation, and discussions with long serving members of staff, we discovered, under a flagstone, a medieval monks fish storage reservoir which was fed from a natural supply high in the Wylye Valley.  Having looked at the contours of the land, carrying out soil analysis and ascertaining the appropriate water inflow, the project was able to commence.
