Boogie Nights - the 70s Musical

With another first for Northern Ireland's musical societies, we brought Boogie Nights - the 70s Musical to the Grand Opera House in November 2009. Co-written by (and originally starring) Shane Richie, the show features many great songs from the 1970s:

  • Blame it on the Boogie
  • Don't Go Breaking My Heart
  • Y.M.C.A.
  • Play that Funky Music
  • I Will Survive
  • No More Tears - Enough is Enough
  • Boogie Wonderland
  • and of course, the title track.

Boogie Nights - the 70s Musical ran from Tue 3-Sat 7 November 2009 in the Grand Opera House. Director Peter Kennedy, Musical Director Wilson Shields and Assistant Choreographer Rebecca Leonard combined to deliver a magical show filled with hits from the 70's.

Many of the audience sang along every night, with some of them even dressing up in the 1970s gear - maybe they wanted to join us on stage!

High School Musical 2

High School Musical 2Our second show for 2009 was the Northern Ireland premiere of High School Musical 2. Troy, Gabriella, Ryan, Sharpay and their friends spent their summer break at Lava Springs Country Club, singing songs including:

  • What time is it?
  • You are the music in me
  • All for one - and of course
  • Humuhumunukunukuapua'a

High School Musical 2 ran from Aug 25-29 in Stranmillis College Theatre, Belfast. The audiences, which included kids from 3 to 93, sang, danced and clapped their way through each performance - and many of them queued up to meet the cast afterwards, getting autographs and photographs with their favourite characters.

Rent

Rent is the ground-breaking musical phenomenon that truly changed Broadway forever and touched millions. Its breathtaking score and inspirational story have defined an entire generation.

After twelve amazing years at Broadway's Nederlander Theatre, Rent - the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon - made its Northern Ireland amateur premiere in June 2009.

We are proud to be the first musical society in N. Ireland to be granted the rights to perform Rent, one of the most talked about shows of recent years. Based on Puccini's La Bohème, it tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of AIDS and drug addiction. Rent ran for 12 years on Broadway, becoming the eighth-longest running Broadway musical.

West Side Story

West Side cast 2004Wow! What a show! We returned to the Grand Opera House for the first time in 30 years, when we performed West Side Story in October.

Our 2004 production of this 50-year-old musical classic was highly acclaimed when we played the Island Hall, Lisburn, and we knew that we had set ourselves a high standard. Did we meet the challenge? Did we surpass it? If the reviews and audience reactions are anything to go by, we certainly did. In our six performances, there were just 37 seats left unsold - a remarkable achievement in an auditorium that holds over 1,000 people.
