Holders face stiff opposition in Carnegie Schools Cup

Carnegie Schools Cup holders North West Regional College have cruised through the first two rounds of this season’s competition with comfortable 3-0 successes against Larne High and Armagh’s St. Patrick’s Academy.  They will entertain Corpus Christi in next week’s Third round tie.  The Belfast side has disposed of Laurelhill 3-1 and South East Regional College 2-1 and with Schools’ International Ryan Burns pulling the strings in midfield will provide much stiffer opposition for the champions.

It took a second half revival for St. Malachy’s to overcome St. Joseph’s in the Second Round.  The Derry school took an early lead and only an outstanding display by goalkeeper Jack Duffin kept the Antrim Road side in contention.  A brilliant 30 yard strike from Daniel McGarry brought St. Malachy’s level and Stephen O’Connor notched the winner 10 minutes from the end.  They await the winners of this week’s replay between Rathmore and St. Mary’s who drew 1-1 in Magherafelt.

It also took a second half comeback for Model to book their place in the Third Round.  They trailed Northern Regional College at the break but thanks to a hat trick by centre forward Marcus Kane snatched a 5-4 win.  They will travel to CBS who trounced Erne Integrated 5-0.

Grosvenor also had to pull out all the stops in their tie away to Carrick Grammar, twice coming from behind before Danny Montgomery hit the winner with 10 minutes remaining.  They are on the road again, journeying to Lisburn to take on South East Regional College who saw off Castlederg 3-0 with Mark Anderson, Jame Croskery and Kenny Gracey getting on the scoresheet.

Bangor Academy and Fort Hill have enjoyed their first foray in the under 18 Carnegie competition.  The Bangor defence has yet to be breached with victories away to Ballymena’s St. Patrick’s 2-0 and Holy Trinity 3-0.  With home advantage they will be fancied to book a place in the quarter finals but Fort Hill, who have accounted for Glastry 2-0 and Fivemiletown 4-2, will be eager to maintain their interest in the event.
