A brilliant display by goalkeeper Jack Duffin enabled Northern Ireland Schools Under 18 Manager Bob Ramsey to maintain his unbeaten home record against Australia as his team began their international programme with a 1-1 draw against the tourists before a large crowd at Seaview.
Northern Ireland had the first chance on 17 minutes when a crossfield pass from Graham Crown sent Marcus Kane through but the winger shot into the side netting.
The visitors also had their chances with Mitchell Robinson shooting wide while Duffin pulled off the first of a string of fine saves, diving low to his right to deny Devon Gibson.
The home team opened the scoring after 23 minutes through Kane. A Shane Jennings header from a corner on the right by Ryan Burns was cleared off the line but Kane pounced to net with a low left foot shot.
Australia introduced Ian Kamau but the substitute missed a glorious opportunity within 3 minutes of the restart, firing over the bar from 8 yards. Kamau made amends on 70 minutes, supplying the cross from which Brendan MacLean scored from close range.
Soon afterwards Thomas McBride was unfortunate to see his 20 yard effort clip the top of the bar.
In the final ten minutes Australia piled on the pressure in search of a winning goal but found Duffin in unbeatable form with great saves to keep out MacLean and Kamau.
