The Northern Ireland campaign to retain the Centenary Shield got off to a disastrous start with the Under 18 team going down 4-1 to England at Seaview.  The game was switched to Seaview when Comber was declared unplayable.

The hosts barely had time to take a breath as England took full advantage of Northern Ireland’s defensive frailties. Tim Rivers opened the scoring after 11 minutes and Dale Whitham doubled the lead on 25 minutes.  Northern Ireland went close when a 25 yard shot by Shane Jennings grazed the crossbar and Robbie Hume shot wide with only the keeper to beat. Further strikes from Kenny Reeves and Rivers just before the break gave the visitors a commanding lead.

After the interval Northern Ireland took command and Michael Smith reduced the leeway with a free kick after Darren Coyle had been brought down on the edge of the box.
