Northern Ireland's hopes of retaining the Centenary Shield ended with a 1--1 draw against Wales at Windsor Park. There was some consolation for the Under 18 team as the draw and a 1-0 win over the Republic of Ireland meant that they regained the Celtic Cup for the first time since 2000.
The Welsh team's travel plans were disrupted by the closure of all airports caused by the Icelandic volcanic eruption which meant that they had to travel to Belfast by ferry and coach, arriving at 4.30 on Friday morning. However, the visitors showed no sign of fatigue as they took control of the game straight from the kick off.
Inside 45 seconds Ross Frame raced through the home defence but his shot deflected off a defender to Jack Duffin. One minute later Josh Griffiths headed wide.
Ryan Burns was causing problems for the visitors. On 42 minutes the winger cut in from the right but his low left foot shot was straight at the keeper. Two minutes later after another penetrating run Burns found Darren Coyle who fired over the bar.
After 66 minutes Northern Ireland went in front when Steffan Jones failed to hold a fierce shot by Matthew Harkin.
Ten minutes later Wales deservedly drew level with a low shot by Josh Griffiths just inside the post.
However, Harkin went close to restoring the lead with a shot which rebounded off the post
