WEST MIDLANDS BRANCH, BUTTERFLY CONSERVATION

From J. Minshall.
3 Hentley Tor,
Wootton-under-Edge,
Glos.

Many thanks for your letter concerning the possible sightings of Silver-studded blue in Gloucestershire. It was most kind of you to take the trouble, and I appreciate and share your interest in the matter.

However, I'm afraid I have to tell you that my sighting of the Silver-studded blue in 1979 was not in Glos., it was in the New Forest. It seems that Mr. Robertson, in precising my letter to him for inclusion in BBCS News 24, misunderstood the sense of my new sightings and reported all my sightings as being made in Glos..

I'm sorry to bring this disappointing news, but there still seems to be a certain amount of evidence of this beautiful insect in Gloucestershire.

In the coming months I will certainly keep my eyes open on the Cotswolds for any evidence of the Silver-studded blue.

Many thanks for the copy of your Newsletter which I found most interesting.

John Minshall

STOP PRESS   We have just heard from Brian Wildridge that a man called D______ of Christchurch, Hampshire "has been going to Bernwood Forest and beating for Black and Brown Hairstreak larvae at the appropriate time, breeding the larvae, and selling the end product in his shop." As Brian points out in his letter, collecting, apart from the Large Blue, is not illegal, although there is a clear "No Collecting" sign at Bernwood, which those familiar with the area will have seen. Collecting larvae etc. is just as serious as collecting specimens with the net, especially where rare species are concerned, and the actions of this individual are totally irresponsible.
