Discover the magnificence of moths
National Moth Night
Saturday 22 May 2004
This is the first time National Moth
Night has been held in May and it comes at a time of year when moth-trap catches
are particularly varied and colourful. The potential variety of species and
presence of those crowd-pleasing hawk-moths should make National Moth Night 2004
popular with the public. A variety of scarce species are also on the wing at
this time of year, which should ensure plenty of scope for adding to our
knowledge of UK moth distributions.
As there are some interesting day-flying species on the wing at this time of the
year, in a break with tradition we have extended the event to cover the daytime
period of Saturday 22 May.
A special moth night (and day) event for anyone interested in seeing the beauty of some of
our local moth species will be organised by Butterfly Conservation West Midlands
branch. Please keep an eye open for the May 2004 Events page.
The results from each site will be collected in Britain’s biggest single night
survey of the moths around the country, a summary of which is published in the
journal Atropos.
Further details of the target species, how to take part and events around the
country will be available at:
www.nationalmothnight.info
or by phoning the National Moth Night Information Line (09068 446862, calls cost
60p per minute).
