Over the last 14 years 32 species of butterfly have been seen, but two of these (Grayling and Wood White) have only occurred in one year.
The commonest species are: Ringlet, Hedge Brown, Meadow Brown and Speckled Wood, while Brimstone, Peacock, Comma, Orange Tip, Large and Small Skipper are all regularly seen. As elsewhere, the Holly Blue is in the declining part of its cycle. Common Blues are currently scarce, while Brown Argus were seen in the early 80's.
The migrant Red Admiral, Painted Lady and Clouded Yellow are all seen periodically, while both Purple and White Letter Hairstreaks are seen in the tree tops. The rarest resident - Marsh Fritillary- maintains a tenuous hold thanks to limited re-introductions.
Pearl Bordered Fritillary, Small Heath and Grizzled Skipper are no longer seen and the Small Copper has declined in numbers. The odd Silver Washed Fritillary and Marbled White appear in some years.
